Townsville's Past
Sailing past Townsville on his first visit to Australia in 1770, Captain James Cook, although he didn’t land, named coastal regions such as Magnetic Island, Cleveland Bay and Cape Cleveland.
The first Europeans recorded landing in Cleveland Bay in 1819 was explorer and botanist Alan Cunningham and Phillip Parker King. Botanical specimens were collected by Cunningham and taken back to England.
Shipwrecked in 1846,14 crew members including James Morrill from the barque, the Peruvian for 42 days. Morrill was the first European to live in the area with the local indigenous Bindal people for 17 years.
North Queensland’s first European settlement was Bowen in 1861. Bowen was formally known as Port Denison.
